Support from AMA (WA) for proposed cancer centre

Sunday March 27, 2022

The AMA (WA) supports the proposed WA Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

There is considerable national and global evidence that dedicated, mission-focused comprehensive cancer centres markedly improve the cancer journey for people living with cancer.

Western Australia needs a centre like this, similar to the interstate centres of excellence in Melbourne or Sydney that are already in existence.

Comments attributed to AMA (WA) President Dr Mark Duncan-Smith:

“Facilities such as those proposed for the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre site would enable timely access to the latest treatments for WA cancer patients, and provide world-class integrative care.”

“We know that centre of excellence initiatives like this attract the finest clinicians and best researchers. The ability to focus on their specialties enables the most advanced therapeutics and best multi-disciplinary care to be provided to patients.”

“While Western Australia already has outstanding clinicians and researchers, the added focus such a centre provides will improve the ability to attract national research funding that has been waning in recent years.”

“The AMA (WA) looks forward to the positive outcomes we can achieve together for WA in the development of the WA Comprehensive Cancer Centre.”
