New FHRI Fund Strategy sets WA’s research direction for the next five years

Wednesday July 23, 2025

The State Government has released the Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund Strategy 2025-2030, outlining its priorities for long-term investment in health and medical research across Western Australia.

With a dedicated investment pool of $1.8 billion, the FHRI Fund aims to accelerate real-world health outcomes through structured and transparent funding programs. More than $260 million has already supported over 745 projects since the Fund’s inception in 2020.

The new strategy continues this momentum, with a strengthened focus on areas of unique importance to WA, including Aboriginal health, rural and remote care, precision medicine, and digital health. Importantly, the strategy introduces an annual Spotlight Program, which will fund a single major issue each year through a five-year commitment, encouraging collaborative problem-solving between clinicians, researchers, and consumers.

The AMA (WA) acknowledges the importance of long-term, strategic investment in health research and innovation and welcomes initiatives that seek to improve patient outcomes across WA’s diverse communities. While the broader impact of the strategy will depend on its implementation and integration with frontline services, we support a vision that seeks to better translate research into practical, equitable health outcomes.

We look forward to seeing how the Strategy shapes future opportunities for clinicians, researchers, and health professionals to collaborate in the delivery of smarter, locally responsive care.
