WA WINS BIG AT NAT CON

Commitment to causes and hard-fought campaigns from the AMA (WA)

were deservedly recognised at the annual AMA conference

A

ustralian Medical Association National

Conferences can be very nervous events

for WA Presidents. To travel to the other

side of the country, attend the official opening

and then the major social function and wait –

hoping that the role of their State Association

will be fully and properly recognised by

winning one or other Federal Awards. This

wait can turn even the most confident

presidents into nervous medical

students sitting their first exams.

For WA, winning one or two awards

each year is de rigueur. For AMA (WA)

President Dr Andrew Miller

at the 2017 National Conference,

held in Melbourne a few weeks

ago however, it was virtually a

clean sweep, winning three of

the top four awards.

The

BEST LOBBY CAMPAIGN AWARD

recognised

the hard work by the AMA (WA) on the successful

introduction of the three-year employment

contracts for interns.

As the Award Citation stated:

The successful

introduction of the three-year employment

contracts for interns is a standout achievement.

The reform eliminates the previous system of

contracts, thereby eliminating both the cost and

the stress of interns having to reapply for their jobs

on an annual basis.

The judges commented that AMA WA’s policy

success should contribute to improved health

outcomes across the WA system.

This initiative may spread nationally over time.

In addition, the successful recombination of the

Minister of Health and Mental Health is also a

noteworthy success for the WA branch.”

Bring on the wheelbarrow:

AMA President Dr Michael Gannon presents AMA (WA) President

Dr Andrew Miller with the award for Most Innovative Website or New Media.

The second major award won by the AMA (WA) was the

MOST INNOVATIVE USE OF WEBSITE OR NEWMEDIA

.

Members will remember the effort that went into highlighting

he importance of health in the March 2017 State Election. A key

part of this was the launch and maintenance of a newwebsite

www.wahealthfirst.com

– the first of its kind established by any

state AMA.

This website, which played a pivotal part in the election

campaign, was designed from scratch by the AMA (WA) social

media manager Nic Ingram.

Again, the judges showered the website with commendation:

“WAhealthfirst.com.au

utilises a newmedia approach that

generates conversation from content advocating AMA WA’s

position on key political issues, most relevant to the recent State

election earlier this year.

“Powered through the Wordpress content system, the attribution

of the website’s innovative approach can be given to its easily

identifiable domain name branding.”
