Manual Handling Unit



AMA Training’s Manual Handling course has been designed for all persons exposed to the risk of sustaining an injury in a workplace environment while providing quality care services.

The course provides participants with the underpinning knowledge work with safe handling procedures for manual handling in the workplace specifically for the health and care support industry. This includes the use of industry standard equipment such as hoists, shower trollies, slide boards, electric beds and wheelchairs.

This unit can be completed individually however AMA Training recommends that people seeking employment as a care worker consider completing the unit as a part of the 3 day Health and Care Support Work Course

Course Content

  • Define the meaning of ‘Manual Handling’
  • Demonstrate an understanding of manual handling hazards and risks in the workplace.
  • Describe and apply the ‘Codes of Practice’ for manual handling hazards and risks in the workplace
  • Identify additional risk factors when completing manual handling tasks
  • Describe workplace policies and procedures for injury reporting and return to work programs
  • Implement strategies to improve manual handling processes in the workplace, while complying with organisational policies and procedures.

The learner will demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to perform manual handling safety in the workforce identify manual handling hazards assess the risks and follow workplace policies and procedures.


On successful completion of class participation, demonstration and written assignments students will be issued a Statement of Attainment for unit of Competency HLTWHS005: ‘Conduct manual tasks safely’
