Certificate III in Business (Legal Administration)

Overview

This Legal Administration Traineeship is designed to give you the skills and knowledge you need when working as an administrative assistant in a legal practice. It is a form of nationally recognised training that is widely accepted by industry as an effective way to develop qualified administrative employees.

The Certificate III in Business (Legal Administration) consists of the following competencies:

Core Units

  • BSALPP301A: Apply knowledge of the legal system to complete tasks
    This unit covers the completion of a range of common legal administrative duties and the knowledge of the legal system that is required to carry them out.
  • BSALPP302A: Carry out search of the public record
    This unit covers completing a search of the public record.This involves planning and conducting the search, and obtaining and delivering the information according to instruction.
  • BSACS301A: Apply the principles of confidentiality and security within the legal environment
    This unit covers the use of ethical behaviour when dealing with sensitive and confidential information in a legal environment.
  • BSALR301A: Handle receipt and despatch of information
    This unit covers receiving and distributing incoming mail and collecting and despatching outgoing mail. It also covers collating and despatching bulk mail according to Australia Post standards.
  • BSALC301A: Use legal terminology in order to carry out tasks
    This unit covers understanding and using legal terminology in order to undertake tasks.
  • BSALO301A: Assist in prioritising and planning activities in a legal practice
    This unit covers assisting others (eg, Solicitor) to organise a legal schedule. It involves arranging appointments and other activities based upon court dates and required legislative timelines.
  • BSALF301A: Maintain records for time and disbursements in a legal practice
    This unit covers demonstrating an understanding of maintaining time records and entering disbursements incurred.
  • BSBCMN201A: Work effectively in a business environment
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to work effectively within a commercial or business environment. It includes identifying the rights and responsibilities of employees and employers and conducting business in accordance with the organisational goals, values and standards.
  • BSBFLM303B: Contribute to effective workplace relationships
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to develop, establish and maintain effective workplace relationships and networks. It covers the activities of communication and representation.
  • BSBCMN306A: Produce business documents
    This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to produce various business documents. It includes the skills and knowledge required to select and use a range of functions on a computer application.

Electives

  • BSALPP303A: Deliver court documentation
    This unit covers organising court documents for delivery, planning a schedule of delivery, delivering documents to the appropriate courts and returning proof of document lodgement.

Requirements

12 units to achieve the qualification:

  • 10 core units from the Legal field listed above.
  • 2 elective units. Electives may be selected from units packaged at Certificates II, III or IV. However, only one elective unit may be selected from Certificate II and only one elective unit may be selected from Certificate IV.
