First Aid of Anaphylaxis and Asthma

Overview

Anaphylaxis is an abnormal reaction after exposure to an allergen such as food (peanuts, eggs, shellfish), insect sting (bees, ants, wasps) or medicine. Anaphylactic shock is an extreme and generalised allergic reaction in which the widespread release of histamine causes swelling of the throat and tongue, difficulty swallowing and breathing, heart failure, circulatory collapse and (in some cases) death.

Asthma is a disorder of the lungs and airways. People with asthma have sensitive airways which when exposed to certain triggers causes breathing difficulties and in extreme cases, death.

The key to prevention is awareness of the causes, symptoms, understanding how to prevent exposure combined with knowledge of first aid management.

Course Awards

Upon successful completion of this course students will be awarded an AMA Certificate - First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis and Asthma. The learning outcomes also provide participants with Unit of Competency:
