Hospital doctors second general meeting

More than 150 doctors employed at public hospitals held their second general meeting on October 10, 2000. They again expressed their concern at the direction of health management in WA. Resolutions passed at the meeting reflected growing anger.

Salary Packaging

  1. This meeting believes that the Government's present discriminatory approach will have an adverse impact on recruitment / retention and all appropriate action must be taken to ensure a non-discriminatory approach applies.
Motion carried unanimously
  1. That the AMA and IHLC be asked to coordinate a campaign to achieve this outcome immediately for new employees, with a sustainable solution applying for all effective from 1 July 2001.

KEMH/PMH and Trust Funds

  1. To the Premier, Minister for Health, Commissioner of Health and Metropolitan Health Service Board:
This meeting:
  • Totally rejects the generalised, unsubstantiated attacks on the profession as a whole;

  • expresses its concern over the mismanagement of services, inappropriate use of outside consultants and poorly conceived inquiries rather than properly managing services; and

  • Where appropriate, recommends using the proper authorities to address concerns with individuals; and

  • Considers that approaches to date are further undermining morale, the attractiveness of the public sector and will increase costs. Motion carried unanimously

Metropolitan Health Service Board

  1. That this meeting re-affirms its lack of confidence in the Metropolitan Health Service Board; and

That in the absence of a change in approach by Government, this meeting strongly supports the cessation of all pro bono work from 1 November 2000 by existing clinicians and if necessary escalation of action in accordance with plans refined in consultation with clinical staff associations.
