More about Doctors in Training
Best paid>> Why should you>> How can you>>
The future of medicine in WA lies in the hands of our Doctors in Training (DITs) and the AMA (WA) is committed to supporting the industrial, professional and educational needs of our DITs.
What the AMA (WA) does for Doctors in Training
Through the Doctors in Training, committee issues that influence the lives and careers of young doctors are constantly examined and responded to, and the AMA (WA) campaigns to ensure that standards across all aspects of a junior doctor’s working life are maintained and improved. The DIT committee is a group of AMA (WA) members from Intern level through to Senior Registrar level who meet on a monthly basis. The DIT committee chair and one other committee representative are co-opted members of the AMA (WA) Council, which is the governing body of the AMA (WA).
The committee also provides input into federal DIT issues through its participation in the federal AMA's Council of Doctors in Training (AMACDT). The DIT committee represents you, to State and Federal Government, Medical Colleges, health workforce committees and many other bodies. Current issues under discussion include:
- working hours
- unpaid overtime
- workplace facilities
- access to study leave
- accommodation
- quality workplace facilities
On the lighter side the DIT committee also organises a number of fun social events.
Best paid in Australia
As a result of AMA (WA) negotiations WA DITs are among the best paid junior doctors in Australia. In a recent comparison carried out by AMA (WA) and confirmed by AMA (Vic), into pay rates across the different states, WA Doctors in Training rated as follows:
In addition to this is the Professional Development Allowance which we doubled from $2,194 in 2006 and increasing during the life of the current agreement (depending on your classification) up to $10,927 in 2009.
Why should Doctors in Training be AMA members?
The AMA (WA) has proven to be the most effective negotiators in the country when it comes to salary and conditions for DITs, and were recently recognised nationally at the 2008 AMA National Conference as achieving the best outcome in Australia for salaried doctors.
The AMA can only continue to achieve such outstanding results for WA Doctors in Training if DITs continue to support the Association by becoming members. So protect your future - join the AMA now.
