AMA Awards recognise outstanding contributions
August 13, 2007
The AMA (WA) has recognised the outstanding achievements of three
West Australians for their contribution to medicine and for their
commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of West Australians.
At a gala charity dinner on Saturday night (August 11), Association
President Prof Geoff Dobb said that WA was fortunate to have benefited
from the dedication, professionalism and generosity of the three
award winners.
"Above all else, the three men share real concern and compassion
for ordinary human beings and in their own particular fields have
sought ways to give something back to the community," he said.
Winners of the AMA (WA) Award for 2007 were:
- Prof Tony McCartney - for outstanding service in the field
of gynaecologic oncology which has resulted in women with cancer
getting better treatment through more experienced pelvic surgeons.
- Dr Tim Keenan – for his achievements in the field of arthroscopic
surgery and his humanitarian contribution to the treatment of
refugees through his work with the Red Cross in many of the world's
refugee camps.
"Both men join a long list of dedicated and world-renowned West
Australians who have won the AMA Award, including former Australian
of the Year Fiona Wood and our two Nobel Prize winners, Professor
Barry Marshall and Professor Robyn Warren," said Prof Dobb.
A bronze bust of Hippocrates was presented to both winners.
The AMA (WA) President's Award went to prominent Perth businessman
Mr Jack Bendat for the generous support he has contributed over
many years in helping improve the health and well being of thousands
of West Australians.
"Mr Bendat's philosophy of giving back to the community has seen
him become one of the State's major benefactors," said Prof Dobb. "His
latest decision to help fund the new comprehensive cancer centre
at St John of God Hospital in Subiaco means WA cancer victims now
have access to a treatment centre which is the first of its kind
in Australia for the private sector."
Funds raised during the evening will be donated to the AMA Foundation
which sponsors the Dr YES health education programs for WA school
children.
