Health cuts: We won't let Junior Docs be screwed!

AMA (WA) President Prof Gary Geelhoed has warned the Health Department not to reduce payments to Junior Doctors working overtime as part of their strategy to cut funding by three per cent.

In a letter to Director General of Health, Dr Peter Flett, he writes: "The association does not believe that it is fair or reasonable for Junior Doctors to have to subsidise the department's deficit."

Prof Geelhoed points out that strict strategies are already in place to reduce overtime and that patient safety is being put at risk.

He asks Dr Flett to confirm that the payment of un-rostered overtime for Junior Doctors will not be compromised and that they are paid for the work they do.

Dr Flett revealed details of the three per cent cuts to an Upper House inquiry last week, raising serious concerns that patient care would be compromised and that Junior Doctors would become the sacrificial lambs as part of the "efficiency" drive.

The AMA believes the WA Government is skating on dangerously thin ice if it thinks it can prune staff numbers in Health by more than the equivalent of 500 full time staff in the next nine months without affecting clinical services and patient care.

Dr Peter Flett says natural attrition, reductions in casual and temporary staff levels and less overtime will help achieve the 3 per cent Budget reductions demanded by Treasurer Troy Buswell.

In fact, Dr Flett predicts that the savings he's identified will exceed 3 per cent in the next four financial years!

The AMA (WA) has repeatedly claimed that Health is seriously underfunded – something the Government agreed with in Opposition - and Dr Flett's admission of a $230 million blow out this financial year is further proof that there just isn't enough money to do the job properly.

Slash and burn is standard procedure for any new Government in its first year in office; the tragedy will be if this philosophy puts any serious attempt to "fix" health on the back burner yet again.

Patients deserve better. Brace yourself for more battles!

More back pay errors for N-W doctors

The saga over back pay entitlements for North West salaried doctors continues.

AMA (WA) has established that some doctors have still not received the correct amount, despite two attempts by Health Corporate Network to get it right.

The association is in the process of recovering more than $11,000 for two such members and is concerned that because of these miscalculations, HCN may have incorrectly paid many other doctors. Please contact the association if you have concerns over this issue.

Subi set to become smoke free

Persistent lobbying by AMA (WA) has helped convince Subiaco City councillors to take the first step towards imposing smoking bans in alfresco dining areas within their district.

After initially refusing to join other councils such as Perth, Fremantle and Vincent in making outdoors eating areas smoke free, Subiaco Council last month voted 11:2 in favour of preparing amendments to local legislation which will affect 43 alfresco cafes.

The city will make a final decision on a ban once it reviews any submissions from local businesses and the public.

However, after the meeting Mayor Heather Henderson said there was a strong feeling on council that the change would be implemented.

AMA (WA) President Prof Gary Geelhoed targeted Subiaco councillors in October last year by calling on them to make outdoor dining areas in the city smoke free.

He sent letters spelling out the dangers of passive smoking and enclosed a British Medical Association report which stated that second-hand smoke accounted for 22,000 deaths each year in Europe.

"We congratulate Subi councillors for recognising the impact passive smoking has on both restaurant patrons and staff," he said.

"Hopefully, all councils throughout the State will soon follow the lead of the major metropolitan councils and introduce their own bans."

The Good Grocer

Meanwhile, Applecross supermarket thegoodgrocer has been recognised for banning the sale of cigarettes.

Shop owner, Greg Brindle, has been presented with a commemorative certificate signed by AMA (WA), Heart Foundation and ACOSH.

Local Alfred Cove MLA Dr Janet Woollard handed over the framed certificate last week.

Pictured with Dr Woollard are (L-R) ACOSH President Professor Mike Daube, AMA (WA) Vice President Dr Dave Mountain and Greg Brindle.

Youth Friendly Doctors accredited in SA

The AMA (SA) recently announced the first group of South Australian GPs working towards becoming accredited Youth Friendly Doctors.

These doctors are participating in the Youth Friendly GP Training Program, an AMA (WA) initiative which has proven to be an effective way to better engage young people and provide them with access to age appropriate care.

The SA doctors have already completed the core module, "How to connect with young people and assess their psycho-social wellbeing". They will complete further modules throughout the year.
