Salaried doctors MHS Agreement registered

The Department of Health Medical Practitioners (Metropolitan Health Services) agreement, which was signed by AMA Deputy Executive Director Peter Jennings (left) was registered in the WA Industrial Relations Commission on Thursday, February 7. The agreement is set to provide substantial benefits for members from interns to senior consultants.

Detailed summaries are available in a Members Only area of the website. Financial members will receive the agreement on their AMA (WA) USB.

Hospital meetings will also be organised to explain the new agreement and answer specific questions. Work continues to finalise related agreements.

Some questions posed by junior doctors have already been answered by the AMA.

Health Minister should stay, but listen

The AMA (WA) says Health Minister Jim McGinty should retain the portfolio but must be prepared to work more closely with those doctors and medical professionals operating at the coal face.

“There are many experienced and knowledgeable people in our health system who understand the core problems plaguing WA’s public hospitals and the Minister should make an effort to listen to them,” said association President Prof Geoff Dobb.

Federal Budget: AMA calls for more beds and training

The AMA has called for an injection of more than 3700 beds into Australian public hospitals as part of the association’s Federal Budget submission for the coming financial year. AMA President Rosanna Capolingua said doctor training, support for GPs and more funding for Indigenous health needed to be high on the new Rudd Government’s health spending priority list along with more hospital beds.

Get ready for an eventful 2008!

The highlight of the 2008 AMA (WA) events calendar is the much anticipated trip to Egypt for the 2008 AMA (WA) Clinical Conference in Cairo during September. The trip will give members the opportunity to explore the pyramids and temples, tour the Nile and network with other WA practitioners as well as participate in a stimulating clinical program.

Prof Khangure takes up College Presidency

Prof Mark Khangure has taken up the Presidency of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists for a two-year period starting in January this year.

Prof Khangure has a distinguished record of achievement within the College having been the recipient of several scientific awards, held appointments as the Baker Fellow, and the Rohan Williams Travelling Professor, served as Senior Education Officer for Western Australia and as a College examiner.

Former West reporter joins AMA media office

The AMA (WA) has appointed Peta Rule to the position of Assistant Manager Public Relations.

Ms Rule, a former journalist on The West Australian for five years, covered a variety of news areas, including two years as a health reporter.

“Peta gained the respect of the medical profession for her excellent coverage of such issues as WA’s growing elective surgery waiting lists, difficult working conditions at Princess Margaret Hospital and many poignant human interest stories related to health,” said AMA (WA) President Geoff Dobb.
