AMA helps deliver "best achievable" pay deal
After more than 18 months of robust and at times turbulent
negotiations with the WA Government, the AMA (WA) has brokered
a significantly improved industrial agreement which has been
formally accepted by salaried medical practitioners.
At a well
attended General Meeting held on October 10, members agreed
that the offer was "the best package that could be achieved."

AMA welcomes GP referral for MRIs
The AMA has welcomed the Federal Government's decision
to allow GPs to refer patients for Medicare-eligible MRI scans,
something the association has been wanting for some time.
From
January 1, next year GPs will be able to refer patients for
MRI scans of the knee and, where multiple sclerosis is suspected,
of the head.

Election Watch
October 22, 2007
Getting health back on the election agenda
Federal AMA President, Dr Rosanna Capolingua, has expressed
her disappointment that neither leader chose to discuss their
plans for the future health of the nation in Sunday night's
Leaders' Debate.
Dr Capolingua said it is hard to believe
that health hardly rated a mention from either side of politics
throughout the 90-minute debate.

Lord Mayor urged to make Northbridge smoke free
AMA (WA) is urging Perth's new Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi
to introduce a smoking ban in all Northbridge alfresco dining
areas.
The side walk cafes in the popular precinct have become
a haven for smokers and the footpaths are being polluted with
smoke and cigarette butts.
It's time for the City of Perth to
follow the lead of Fremantle and put the health and well being
of the community first. Eating outdoors should be both an enjoyable
and risk-free pastime. Unfortunately, in Northbridge it has
become a health hazard.
Meanwhile, the AMA and the Australian Council on Smoking
and Health (ACOSH) are writing to Australia's major political
parties seeking a commitment to a range of tobacco control
initiatives.
