2011 Clinical Conference

More than 50 AMA (WA) members and their partners took part in the 2011 AMA (WA) Clinical Conference, held in the Spain and Portugal.

Over the past two decades, the AMA (WA) Clinical Conference has grown to be one of the most popular activities organised by the Association and combines a strong medical and educational stream with related visits to key historical attractions.

This year, the conference was held in the cosmopolitan Spanish city of Barcelona, including the famous Ramblas area of the city, the architectural masterpieces of Gaudi, the stunning seaside village of Sitges, the Picasso Museum and Montserrat.

Presented by Dr Rosa Deulofeu, Director of the Catalan Transplant Organisation.

Dr David Elvira, Health Economist and Director of the Observatory for Health with the Catalonia Ministry for Health discussed the potential healthcare reforms of the Catalan healthcare system in order to address the financial sustainability of the system.

Personally Controlled e-health Record (PCEHR)
Professor Bernard Pearn-Rowe, GP, Academic and Program Clinical Lead with the National e-health Transition Authority outlined the imminent revolution in the way health care is practised in Australia.

e-health in Catalonia:  Setting up a Reference Model in Europe

Dr Joan Guanyabens, CEO of the Catalan Agency for Health Information, Assessment and Quality, manages and coordinates the ICT strategy in healthcare.

e-health in Australia and Personally Controlled Electronic Health Records (PCEHR) – A Medico Legal Perspective
Ms Deborah Jackson, Lawyer and Manager of the MDA National Claims and Advisory Service, summarised the role of the National e-health Transition Authority (NEHTA) in enabling more effective methods of collecting, securing and exchanging health information electronically.

The Catalan Perspective on the Optimal Organisation of Healthcare in Catalonia and Barriers to that Care
Dr Toni Dedeu, Director of International Affairs and Cooperation with the Ministry of Health, Catalonia, spoke on the evolution of the Catalan model of health care – a National Health Service based model.

The Psychiatry of Physical Symptoms
Past AMA (WA) President and psychiatrist Professor Paul Skerritt spoke on the diagnosis of psychiatric disorder presenting to other specialties with physical symptoms.

Hypothetical
Professor Bernard Pearn-Rowe and Associate Professor Rosanna Capolingua explored a range of medical practice issues in a serious – yet light hearted – way.
